Spring 1 - January 2024 to February 2024

Happy New Year to you and your families! We hope that you had a blessed, peaceful and restful Christmas and New Year break and we are very excited to welcome the children back (those returning to us and our new starters) and have some fun exploring and learning this term.

Little Red Riding Hood - Traditional Tale

Our story for this term is the Traditional Tale of Little Red Riding Hood. We will support the children in learning the story by undertaking some adult led activities (like making and tasting some biscuits) and encouraging the children to participate in child led activities too. Hopefully the children will be able to act out their own re-tellings of the story by the end of the term. Who will be Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma, the Big Bad Wolf and the Woodcutter? Who will want to be the different charcacters?

Maths

We will continue with counting numbers 1 - 5+ and the recognition of the corresponding numerals. We will also help the children to develop language that we use when comparing quantities, such as 'more than', 'less than' and fewer than. We also plan to continue with 'subitising' and introducing the idea of making a pattern.

More and Less Posters (SB241) - SparkleBox

RE - Mary the Mother of Jesus, Baptism and God's Family.

This term is going to be busy for Nursery! We will start by talking about Mary the mother of Jesus. We will ask the children to think about how special their own mothers are and what makes them special. For the latter half of this term we will be talking about and engaging the children in activities about Baptism and being part of God's Family. Hopefully we will have lots of fun along the way!

Topic - Winter and Ready for the Weather

This term we will be looking at Winter and all the changes that happen during the season. We will talk about how we can be ready and prepared for the weather. Hopefully the children will be able to experience what happens when water freezes and when ice melts. We also hope to investigate how other materials change if they are heated or cooled!

Week 1

We had a fantastic first week back after the Christmas holidays and the children have been brilliant in settling back into the routine of Nursery. We joined in with the French Day theme on our first day. The children enjoyed looking at the world map to find out where we live and where France is. A couple of the children knew what a map was and were able to tell us which parts were land and which were water! Well done!

We also talked about one of our Virtues for this term. The nursery children were able to make decorated plates to reflect how God loves us always and some children drew their families because their families love them too!

Week 2

We have had a very cold but busy week! When we went outside tomplay the children found that the sand had frozen and we talked about how the lumps were like big rocks. The children also investigated ice and different ways we can help it to melt. One of our children said that salt would help to melt the ice. Well done! For our RE topic we looked at photographs of our selves with our mothers and talked about how important our mothers are. We then talked about Jesus and his mother Mary and how important she was to him too.

Mission Week - Mary our Mother

Week 3 - Our visit to church to learn about Baptism

We visited Our Lady and St Anne's church on Friday morning with Reception class. Father Joe opened the font and talked about Baptism for us all. We learned about the special Chrism, water, white garment and candle that are used when we are Baptised. The children were fantastic and were able to have a look inside the font if they wanted to. Thank you Father Joe for spending your time with us.

Week 4

We learned about looking after our teeth and also made some shortbread to share at breaktime. The children were amazing and some even remembered what ingredients we used to make the shortbread!

Week 5

As part of our learning about Baptism we roleplayed our own Baptism in class with the dolls. We also used a white cloth and made the Sign of the Cross for the 'Baptism' of our baby dolls. Well done everyone!
